Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has expressed public frustration following a flashpoint with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães, claiming the Brazilian should have been dismissed for an attempted headbutt during City's 1-0 victory on Sunday.
VAR review maintains on-field decision despite contact
The incident occurred in the second half of the Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium. Footage of the exchange shows Gabriel moving his head toward Haaland following a verbal dispute. While the contact appeared minimal on broadcast replays, Haaland insisted post-match that the intent alone warranted a red card.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) conducted a check for violent conduct but ultimately opted not to advise referee Michael Oliver to visit the pitchside monitor. This decision aligned with the current PGMOL threshold, which often requires a "significant" degree of force for a head-to-head motion to be upgraded to a sending-off, rather than just the gesture of intent.

Haaland highlights inconsistency in officiating standards
Speaking after the match, Haaland questioned why the motion was not penalized more severely. The striker’s comments suggest a belief that players are being given too much leeway in physical confrontations that involve aggressive gestures. "If I do that, it's a red card," Haaland told reporters, suggesting a perceived lack of consistency in how superstars are officiated in high-profile title deciders.
From a tactical perspective, the decision to keep Gabriel on the pitch allowed Arsenal to remain in a low-block defensive shape for the remainder of the game. Had a red card been issued, the defensive burden on Mikel Arteta’s side would have likely shifted the match from a narrow 1-0 contest into a more expansive attacking opportunity for Manchester City.

Gabriel avoids retrospective action as match concludes
Because the incident was formally reviewed by VAR during the flow of play, it is unlikely that Gabriel will face retrospective disciplinary action from the Football Association. FA rules generally prevent further punishment for incidents that were "seen" and managed by the officiating team at the time.
While City secured the three points to move clear at the top of the table, the altercation marks the latest chapter in a growing rivalry between the two players. This specific lack of intervention highlights the ongoing tension between players' expectations of safety and the VAR’s high bar for "clear and obvious" errors in subjective physical disputes.
