Fremont, California, has been named the happiest city in America for the sixth year in a row, according to a 2026 report analyzing emotional, physical, and economic well-being across 182 major U.S. municipalities. The Bay Area city maintained its lead by scoring high in categories related to community stability and resident health, according to the annual rankings of American cities.

High health and community stability metrics drive ranking
The 2026 study evaluated cities across three primary dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment. Fremont’s top placement is largely attributed to its low separation and divorce rates, which the report on city happiness factors identifies as the lowest in the nation.
Beyond social stability, the city also ranked highly for the physical health of its residents and a high percentage of households with annual incomes above $75,000. These factors contributed to a high score in the "Emotional and Physical Well-Being" category, where Fremont consistently outperforms other major metropolitan areas.

Broader regional and national happiness trends
Fremont is joined by several other California cities in the top tier of the 2026 rankings, including San Jose, Irvine, and San Francisco. The analysis of 182 U.S. cities indicates that cities with easy access to outdoor recreation and higher job security tend to report higher levels of life satisfaction. Overland Park, Kansas, and Madison, Wisconsin, also placed within the top five, highlighting a trend where mid-sized cities with strong community infrastructures rival larger coastal hubs for resident satisfaction.
The data suggests that while the Bay Area faces significant cost-of-living challenges, the economic and lifestyle benefits found in Fremont continue to provide a measurable advantage in national well-being comparisons. The study used 28 key indicators, ranging from life expectancy and depression rates to average daily leisure time, to determine the final scores for each city.
